Ken T. -- while in Mexico in January

Been another pleasant day in Mexico, I realize some are concerned about the crime in this country but reading the news from back home I am begining to wonder if I should take out permanent residency here. We can't escape crime - anywhere nor should we let the fear of it cause us to crawl into our shells. I really admire the tenacity of the Mexican people, they are willing to do anything just to put bread on their tables Many set up businesses on sidewalks or beside the busy streets - so they don't have to pay rent. One lady a block from me, sets up her table next to a street lamp every day of the week - even Christmas day, somehow is able to plug in her juicers into the power going to the lamp and there she sits with a pan of carrots, beets and oranges and makes juices from early morning until well past sunset. Another family put out a beautiful display of baskets, colorful blankets and hammocks, not just a sample of each but their whole inventory is hung on ropes going from the branches of one tree to the next. This morning their 3 little girls were sitting on small children's chairs with little tables and they were eating breakfast - unfortunately I didn't have my camera. At the end of the day their father and pregnant mother squeeze everything back into a truck with hi sides and a canvas top, and this is repeated day after day. Or there is the fellow who also has a truck with a canvas top, he sleeps in the cab and at sunrise he is selling coffee - grinding it by hand and is there right into the late evening - always with a plesant smile. Another older fellow with short useless legs which he is unable to control at all -which flop under him as he rides around on a skateboard - oversees the selling of raspberries and blackberries or holds out a cup asking for donations Others are selling brooms. carvings, candy, etc. Hope life is going well for you - count your blessings.

  3. Hi Ken, we miss you but certainly appreciated your account of the tenacity and ingenuity of the people there. I don't blame you for staying there at length. I've met incredibly wonderful people on some of the Caribbean islands I've visited and it is always difficult to leave so I understand why you enjoy your time there. God Bless!!
