June 2015 Maranatha Group at Hope, BC

Ruby went on a mission trip. Bonnie and Gay went, too. They all spent some time at our campgrounds at Hope, BC, helping to clean up from the damage the ice storm left behind.

Ruby shared some of her photos with us, and it is nice to see how pretty Camp Hope is looking these days.

I think this was a pastor's family from California that came to lead out in the Maranatha project.

What pretty planters and beautiful flowers.
Neat and clean lodge
Sylvia enjoying the drumming entertainment the Native group had for the Camp Hope group.
The Native group, who live very close to the camp, showed their blankets and medicines they make.
What a beautiful blanket.

The Native group put on a lovely meal of cheese and crackers and vegetables for the volunteers.

Thank you, Ruby, for sharing pictures from you time at Camp Hope.

Help for university student

Hi,

I just messaged with Benyamin (former student Bible worker at OCC) to ask how the money situation is for his brother at university.
He was so thankful I asked.

He is two months behind but was not wanting to ask for help again.
I said I would ask any of the OCC family to see if any one can help at all.
Benyamin did make a payment yesterday, but it did not sound like it covered all the costs.

If anyone if able to help out, please e-mail me at glendq[at]gmail.com and I will send it on.

Benyamin said it has been a tough day for him and was so amazed at my asking him about things today just when it was needed. He said his faith is strong in the Lord.

Thank you.

Quilting bee

Jerrie Lou, Kate, and Loretta

Kate is a lovely lady who lives in the Kelowna area. She got the material for a soft and pretty quilt and started working on it, cutting out all the blocks.
Then her ALS progressed to the point where she could not work on the quilt.
Mikey O. saw the need and knew just who to invite to help with this project.
Quilters Jerrie Lou and Loretta found an evening where they could get together with Mikey, who also quilts, and work on finishing up this small quilt.
Looks like their work was done well and now Kate has a beautiful quilt she can give to someone she knows of who needs it.

~

What a wonderful story and so glad you shared it, Mikey O.

Deaconess visits

Sometimes we do not know exactly what our church deaconesses do through out the year. We know that they help with communion services and then what?

Well, this week I found out that two people were visited by two women from Orchard City SDA church.

Beth Brown with cute little cuddly bear.

Beth Brown used to come to Orchard City SDA church on a very regular basis until lately when her aches and pains got to be a few too many.

She lives at Cottonwoods Extended Care in Kelowna. The nurses and workers there find her to be friendly and gentle. They like her and treat her really nicely.

When Don, Tyler, Amanda and I went to see her this evening she had a purple Purdy's box under her little tree and this cute little bear on the bed by her pillow. It warmed my heart to know she had had some visitors from church come by to see her. (I also saw again the bright medal on a red ribbon given to Beth by Gay M. when she went to visit Beth. There is an interesting story behind the medal and maybe one day Gay will send her stories in to us to read about).

Thank you so much for caring for Beth.

Beautiful plant box for Karen.

On Christmas Eve, Don and I called up to see if it was OK to visit Karen and Dave E. for a short while. Even though Karen is recovering from a major surgery, they were gracious and friendly host and hostess. I spied this beautiful plant while we were there and was told that Jerrie Lou and Loretta had been by. It is so nice to see and hear about these visits that happen and often we know nothing about them.

Thank you so very much, ladies who visit and bring nice surprises to people who are sick or hospitalized.

Sometimes we do not know that a church member has been sick or is in the hospital. Please, friends and family, let others know that your loved one is not well and we will make sure to keep them in our prayers and they most likely will get a nice visit from the deaconesses, too.

Let us all remember that a prayer and a visit mean an awful lot to friends that are sick or lonely.

And now the pictures of two happy people... Thank you for your love and support!

Derek received his LEGO set and here are two pictures his mum put on FB so we all can see that he will enjoy putting this set together while he waits in his hospital room.

It is good to see him so happy looking and with his hair growing in again.
Ready to start building his new LEGO set people donated to getting for him.

Here is Jonathan, the brother of Beniamin C. who was at OCC in the summer of 2013.
Beniamin took the donation money from OCC members and paid his December bill yesterday.

Jonathan says, "Thank you so much and God is awesome!"
The school Jonathan goes to is Stefan Demetrescu.

It is wonderful to see our little bit of money going so quickly to help people in California and in Romania. Thank you for caring about others.

There is still another bit of money that Jonathan needs help with, so please let me know if you can do something for him.

Remember Beniamin?

This past summer we had about 5 or 6 young people staying at Orchard City SDA Church while doing mission work in our area.

The summer before, there was a different group, and since they stayed longer and were at our church at a time when we were around the area more, we got to know them a little better.

I have just recently heard from Beniamin, one of the men who was at our church two summers ago.
He is now a pastor working in a country in Eastern Europe and does not have a large salary.

We have been invited to help with a special project for a couple of months.
This project is to help Beniamin's younger brother, Jonathan, go to the SDA academy in his country.

Please e-mail me at glendq@gmail.com if you would like to know more about this situation or to donate money for the next couple of months.

Thank you so much.

Donation for Derek

Today I saw a post on FB that I really was interested in.
Remember Derek, the 8-year-old boy we pray for often at church?
He is just able to start eating again after two weeks, and is in isolation. What is there to do for a boy who has to stay in one room in the hospital, especially now just before Christmas?

Derek's uncle is giving us all an opportunity to help with a special gift for Derek while he waits for his GVHD problems to subside. Go to Derek's GiveForward page if you are interested in helping with this special gift for him.

If you read the page, it is all explained very well, and the site is very easy and safe to use.
Happy giving.

The Youth are Here...

We are so happy to have the young people back at OCC this summer.
They are all happy to be here and eager to work in our church area.

See their happy smiles!

What a fine group.

So thankful for everyone and everything God has given us.

Cooking Class and Meal - October 20 2013 at OCC

Carol and Jerrie Lou, along with Phil and Eileen Brewer, planned and put on a lovely meal for all who registered to come out to the cooking class this Sunday.

Almost 40 people attended and it looked like everyone was happy.
Several ladies helped to serve the dished-up plates to the people sitting at the tables, and the meal began.

The theme was Greek and so the foods for the meal were minestrone soup, roasted mini potatoes, glazed carrots, green beans, Greek salad, spanakopita, and rice.
Dessert was a apple strudel. The interesting ingredient was ground up gingersnap cookies to give it more depth of flavour.

People exclaimed how delicious the whole meal was.

Cookbooks were for sale and many people bought them.

Here are a few pictures to help you see what a great time it was.

Welcome and registration table with cheerful flowers on top.

Did this soup ever smell good!!
A plate full of delicious food ready to be served.
Bonnie takes a plate full of Greek food to serve it to hungry people at the tables.
Eileen and her granddaughter, Kelsey, serving up the dessert.
Seemed to me everyone thought all the food was "so good."
Such a fresh table decoration.
A room full of happy people.
What would we ever do without Carol to share her good ideas and add pretty touches here and there?
Chatting around the table is a great thing to do.
Want to buy a cookbook?
Apple strudel for dessert!
Phil starts the demonstration part of the afternoon with sharing how to make the soup.
Making a point... must be about tearing something, eh?
They each had their own parts to demo, but helped each other too now and then.
An interested audience.
Potatoes and carrots left over -- I think some people got to take some home.
Mostly brown rice but appeals to people who only like white rice.
The bread and spread.
Brittany and Kelsey came with Grama and Grampa to help and do the dishes. It was so nice to have them at the cooking class.
Excellent workers in the kitchen.
Not even half of the dishes they dried.
The tables were brightly decorated.
Showing us how to make brushetta so it is not soggy but very tasty.
Asking questions near the end of the class while others found leftovers.
Cleaning up the demonstration table.
It was a bright and beautiful day around the pond by Orchard City Church.

Thanks to all who came out!
